What multiplies the labor number
Pitch
Labor climbs with steepness — standard 4/12–6/12 is the baseline; very steep 10/12+ work adds roughly 25% or more to labor because of staging, harnesses, and slowed crews.
Stories / access
Two stories add around 6% to the whole job; three-plus stories or tight access add 14% or more — carrying bundles up ladders is real time.
Complexity
Valleys, hips, dormers, and changes of plane add cuts and detail work. A cut-up complex roof adds roughly 8–18% over a simple gable at the same footprint.
Tear-off
Removing the old roof is quoted separately — typically $1.00–$2.50 per square foot of roof area ($100–$250 per square) per layer, disposal included in honest bids.
Flashing & penetrations
Each chimney, vent, or skylight penetration carries its own flashing labor — commonly $150–$450 each — because leaks start at details, not fields.
Decking repairs
Rotten decking found at tear-off is usually billed as an allowance ($350–$1,800 on typical jobs). Nobody can see it until the old roof is off.

How much do roofers charge per square in labor?
Most residential asphalt work lands between $100 and $225 per square in labor, depending on shingle weight and roof shape. Metal and tile run much higher — standing seam craft labor alone can exceed $600 per square.
Why is labor so much higher for standing seam metal?
Standing seam is fabricated and finished on your roof: each panel is measured, cut, folded, and mechanically seamed by hand. It is the slowest mainstream install method, and labor is priced accordingly — often 2–3× an asphalt crew.
Is a low labor bid a red flag?
Sometimes it is just efficiency, but usually a labor bid far under the field means the crew plans to skip underlayment upgrades, reuse flashing, rush penetrations, or it is a per-square number that grows with change orders. Ask what the bid excludes, in writing.
Does roof pitch really change labor cost?
Yes, materially. Steep roofs require harness systems, staging, and slower movement — very steep work (10/12+) commonly adds 25%+ to the labor line versus a standard pitch on the same footprint.
